Alliance Internship Program Overview

Developing the Next Generation of Real Estate Leaders in Virginia

The Alliance Internship Program provides university students across Virginia with meaningful, hands-on experience in real estate, housing policy, and nonprofit leadership. Designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real‑world practice, the program connects students directly with housing providers, industry professionals, and legislative processes that shape communities across the Commonwealth.

How the Program Began

The Alliance created this internship program in response to a growing need for young professionals who want to understand both the business and policy sides of real estate. The Alliance responded by building a statewide program that:

  • Provides real‑world exposure to the housing policy
  • Offers meaningful, resume‑building work
  • Strengthens the pipeline of future real estate leaders
  • Connects students with mentors, investors, and policymakers

Today, the program includes students from the University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Richmond, and is open to students from other institutions across the Commonwealth.

What Interns Do

Alliance interns work directly with board members, committees, and industry partners on substantive projects that make a real impact. Their work includes:

Advocacy & Policy

  • Tracking legislation during the General Assembly
  • Preparing summaries from meetings with legislators
  • Supporting advocacy campaigns
  • Observing legislator meetings and policy discussions

Communications & Public Engagement

  • Assisting with email communications, website, and social media
  • Supporting event coordination and outreach
  • Helping shape the Alliance’s public messaging

On‑the‑Ground Experience

  • Attending investor meetups
  • Attending Legislator meetings (district office and at the Capitol)
  • Learning directly from housing providers

Interns leave the program with practical skills, professional confidence, and a deeper understanding of how real estate shapes communities.
